Everything You Need to Know About Velvet Arts

Welcome to The Velvet Art Shop — a wonderfully tactile and satisfying way to create beautiful works of art, whether you're an experienced colourist or simply looking for a relaxing creative activity.

Our Velvet Art pictures combine raised, soft velvet-like outlines with bright, making it easier to stay within the lines while creating a striking finished picture.

The deep black outlines provide a dramatic contrast against your chosen colours, allowing bright shades to really stand out.

And the best part? You don't have to be an expert artist to create something you're proud of.

What Is Velvet Art?

Velvet Art is colouring with a difference.

Each picture is printed onto 1.2mm thick card, giving the board a sturdy, self-supporting surface that is ideal for colouring.

The outlines of the design are covered in a soft, fuzzy, velvet-like material known as flocking. These raised black outlines aren't just there to look beautiful — they also make colouring easier.

As you colour the white spaces between the outlines, the raised velvet borders act as natural guides, helping you keep your colours where they belong.

The result is a beautifully coloured picture with a bold black velvet outline that makes your artwork really stand out.

Why Are the Velvet Outlines Raised?

The raised velvet outlines are one of the things that make Velvet Arts so enjoyable.

Unlike a traditional colouring picture where you simply have a printed line to follow, our flocked outlines provide a physical guide as you colour.

The soft, raised borders can:

  • Help you stay within the coloured areas.
  • Create a natural barrier between different sections of the picture.
  • Help hide small slips or imperfections.
  • Make colouring easier and less frustrating.
  • Add a unique soft and tactile texture to your artwork.
  • Create a dramatic black contrast against bright colours.

So if your colouring occasionally goes slightly over the line, don't worry — the fuzzy black borders help disguise those little mistakes.

Velvet Art is about enjoying the process, not worrying about perfection.

How Do You Colour Velvet Art?

Creating your Velvet Art picture is simple.

Step 1 — Choose Your Colours

Our brushable felt pens are perfect for colouring Velvet Art boards.

Choose your colours and decide whether you'd like to follow the small colour reference picture included with your artwork or create something completely your own.

There are no rules — your picture can be as colourful and creative as you like. Although you will be supplied with a small picture to match of what we recommend.

Step 2 — Start Colouring

Use the brushable felt pens on the white areas between the black velvet outlines.

The raised flocked lines act as guides, helping you work your way around the picture.

For the neatest finish, take your time and allow the pen to flow naturally across the card.

Step 3 — Let the Colours Shine

The combination of vibrant colours and deep black velvet creates a fantastic contrast.

Bright colours appear even more vibrant against the dark flocked background, giving your finished picture a bold and eye-catching appearance.

Step 4 — Add Some Sparkle

Want to take your artwork to the next level?

Add some glitter!

Glitter is perfect for adding extra detail, highlights and sparkle to your finished creation.

Adding Glitter to Your Velvet Art

Each glitter pack contains 5 glitter colours, along with a bottle of PVA glue.

The glitter colours have been selected to complement the particular Velvet Art picture you're working on, so you can add beautiful sparkling details without having to choose your own colour combinations.

How to Apply the Glitter

Glitter should be applied one colour at a time.

For example:

  1. Apply the PVA glue to all the areas you want to be red.
  2. Sprinkle on the red glitter.
  3. Allow the glue and glitter to settle.
  4. Carefully remove any excess glitter.
  5. Move on to your next colour.
  6. Repeat with the gold, silver or other glitter colours.

It's important to complete one glitter colour before moving on to the next.

This helps prevent the different glitter colours from mixing together and keeps your finished picture looking crisp and detailed.

Top Tip

Work over a sheet of paper or another clean surface when applying glitter. This makes it much easier to collect any excess glitter and keep your workspace tidy.

You can also gently tap the picture after applying glitter to remove loose pieces.

What Pens Should I Use?

We recommend using brushable felt pens with your Velvet Art boards.

They work particularly well because they allow you to colour the spaces smoothly while working around the raised velvet outlines.

A good quality set of brushable felt pens should last approximately three Velvet Art boards, depending on how heavily you colour and the amount of ink used.

Why Brushable Felt Pens?

Brushable felt pens provide a lovely, smooth finish and make it easy to cover the white areas of the board.

They're also particularly enjoyable to use because you can vary the pressure and create different colouring effects.

For the best results, always make sure your pens have plenty of ink before starting a large area.

Follow the Picture — Or Create Your Own!

Every Velvet Art picture comes with a small colour reference picture to give you an idea of how the finished artwork could look.

This is there as a guide — you don't have to follow it!

You can:

  • Follow the suggested colours.
  • Change individual colours.
  • Use completely different colours.
  • Create your own colour combinations.
  • Add glitter wherever you like.
  • Experiment with different shades and effects.

Your Velvet Art is your creation.

A Creative Activity for Everyone

Velvet Arts are designed to make colouring enjoyable and accessible.

The raised outlines can be particularly helpful for anyone who finds traditional colouring books difficult to stay within, while the thick card provides a sturdy surface to work on.

They're also a great option for anyone who simply loves colouring and wants to try something a little different.

Velvet Art can be enjoyed as a relaxing solo activity, a creative project with friends, or a fun way to spend some quality time creating together.

Our Top Velvet Art Tips

Take Your Time

Velvet Art is designed to be relaxing. There's no need to rush.

Enjoy choosing your colours and watching your picture come to life.

Start With Larger Areas

If you're new to Velvet Art, starting with the larger sections can help you get comfortable with the pens and the feel of the raised outlines.

Use the Velvet Lines as Your Guide

Let the raised borders do the work. Guide your pen along the edge of the flocked lines rather than trying to press hard against them.

Don't Worry About Tiny Mistakes

One of the great things about the flocked outlines is that they help disguise small slips. Your finished picture doesn't need to be perfect to look fantastic.

Glitter One Colour at a Time

When using glitter, always finish one colour before starting another.

For example, complete all your red glitter areas first, then move on to gold, then your next colour.

This will help keep your glitter colours separate and your finished artwork looking clean.

Keep Your Glitter Under Control

Glitter can travel!

Work carefully over a clean piece of paper so you can collect excess glitter rather than losing it all over your workspace.
